Mornington Island is in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. Aboriginals have inhabited the island for 200,000 years. Mornington Island has a population of around 4,000. The women on the Island make necklaces, grass skirts and dancing hats for the men to wear. Sandra Came to Darwin in 1987 and lived in Katherine for several years prior to that. She started painting in 1999 at the age of 43. Sandra has a unique painting style that differs from other traditional forms of Aboriginal Art. She paints with traditional ochres and acrylics. In the Year 2000, Sandra entered the Fifth National Art Awards and was published in their catalogue.
